Why Jeff Bezos won't solve world hunger (it's not that easy)
Do you too sometimes, in lieu of your 3 a.m. motivation boosts, think that you can cure cancer or solve world hunger if you were able to? Well I do, and when I was younger I had this thought of why multi-billionaires like Jeff Bezos, Bill Gates or Warren Buffet, can't just pool their money together or even carry out a selfless act of kindness and liquidate their assets to feed all the hungry kids in Africa and India, they clearly have the money to do so, right? Well, it's really not that easy, let's discuss why.
Well firstly let's address why that is a bizarre thought that multi-billionaires hold some kind of superpowers because they are Richie rich-rich. Jeff Bezos for example, is worth $171 billion, however he does not have it all lying in cash in a safe at his mansion. This money is tied up in his assets, i.e., the properties, land, investments etc. that he owns. Elon Musk has a 17% stake in Tesla, owning around 175,000 shares which are worth around $147 billion. That is a major chunk of his net worth, and if he was to liquidate his stake via selling all his shares in the market, that would lead the US stock market to crash drastically.
So we can expect a big charity from billionaires, but not expect them to feed every hungry person in the world, or even in one country. But the sad truth is that even giving food or money to the people infested with the problem of world hunger is not the solution. Because it does seem like the main problem, which is that there are people who are struggling to put food on their tables, and the solution to that would be to provide them with food, right? Well, only if it was that easy, there is an old saying that goes like, "give a man a fish, you feed him for a day, teach a man how to fish, you feed him for his whole life", and this hold true to a big extent in the problem of world hunger, because the main root of this problem is poverty. People are struggling with their meals because the system is designed like this, the poor gets poorer and the rich gets richer.
The poor do not require charity but solidarity, and a change in the system which helps them acquire the basic skills that they need to fill their stomachs for the day. We also get countless amount of government schemes that hand out money to the weaker sections of the society in forms of low interest loans which can form some capital for them to start something and head somewhere, and while that is a good initiative on paper, we must acknowledge that a lot of people who are facing the problem of not being able to afford meals, they might not have a competency to utilize whatever business capital you hand out to them and they are going to be on square one eventually.
The hunger stricken people need education and skills to alleviate their standard of living, merely charity by us won't help them, they require a good system that helps them out of the hole they are in.
